What is the #1 most important thing in the golf swing for making perfect contact?
I’ll tell you — it’s clubface control.
And whether you’re a beginner or a touring professional, where the clubface is at — and before — impact determines the success of every golf shot.
So today I’m going to give you my favorite drill for fixing an open clubface AND the over-the-top swing plane…
Here’s the three-step process to mastering clubface control with opposite and exaggeration action:
Step 1: Create an Opposite Action
for a Positive Reaction
In my experience giving 20,000+ lessons, I would say 80% of players battle with an open clubface at the top of their swing…
And there’s a simple — yet little-practiced — tip to correct this.
But first, I want to ask you a question?
If your clubface is facing the sky at the top or you swing…
Where you do think it’s going to be facing at impact?
The answer is easy — WIDE OPEN!
That’s why you’re slicing the ball… losing distance… and not hitting consistently flush shots.
To fix that… we need to get your clubface pointing DOWN at the top of your swing — and through the impact zone.
So follow the next step to make this happen…
Step 2: Use Two Alignment Rods
to Give Yourself a Visual
Now, I want the clubface pointing down toward the ground at the top of your swing and through impact… creating compression and flush contact…
But that doesn’t mean you can attack the ball from ANY angle…
Because if you close your clubface at the top of your swing and still cast your wrists… or swing over-the-top…
The result will be a fat, pulled, or sliced ball…
So we need to make sure your closed clubface is approaching the ball from the correct angle.
To do that — place one alignment rod in front of your swing line (aiming down the line and at your target)…
Then use another alignment rod in your backswing — pointing the second rod at a 45-degree angle behind you…
These rods will give you real-time feedback and visuals to make sure you are attacking the ball from the correct angles…
(If you need to see what this looks like — check out the video above.)
Step 3: Take Your Backswing
And Analyze Your Angles
Now it’s time to start working this into your swing…
Here are the keys to perfecting this drill:
- Clubface aiming towards the ground at the top of your swing (some players may have the toe of the club point more down than other, but find what FEELS most natural for you)
- Start your downswing along the line of the alignment rod (use the rod pointing behind you as a visual reference for the correct line)
- Make sure your LEFT GLOVE LOGO is pointing towards the ground (if you stop your club in the takeaway you should see this action beginning)
- And bend your RIGHT WRIST toward your forearm as much as possible (this will hold the angle for perfect compression — and LAG!)
If you can perfect these for FEELS and VISUALS you’ll start to create a draw motion in your swing…
Giving yourself perfect clubface control and maximum compression.
As I always say, it’s best if you can do this drill with a down-the-line camera so you can see your recording and identify whether your clubface is actually pointing down… and if you’re starting to come from the inside… instead of over-the-top.
But If This Drill Is Too Difficult Master… Discover the Tour Pro’s #1 Secret Weapon For Automatically Correcting Your Swing Plane AND Clubface Control
You see, I get a lot of guys coming to me saying:
